WE ARE STEAMPUNK FASHION & STYLE LOVERS! BUT WHAT DOES STEAMPUNK MEAN?

What is Steampunk? Some of you may have seen those mechanical inspired accessories and wondered ‘What in hell are those?’, or some really cool illustrations with fantastic mechanical animals or steam powered boats, zepellins or even body parts, showing a really complex structure made of nuts and gears. Here’s the answer to your question…

When it comes to media and entertainment, it is looked at as a sub-genre of science fiction that uses technology and aesthetic designs inspired by the 19th century. Steampunk works often take place in alternative history worlds where Steam powered technology is extremely prominent. This is usually one of the most defining aspects of many Steampunk works. For example, Steampunk technology often on display are Steam powered cars, airships, and analog computers. Typically, the technology and aesthetic shown are nearly as advanced as the technology we have in our modern world but with a distinctly retro look and feel.

Steampunk also refers to an artistic style and clothing fashion thats been developed thanks to the numerous Steampunk works out there. This style and fashion has a distinctly victorian feel inspired by late 19th and early 20th century design. But it also has a touch of retro futurism thanks to the prominent display of Steam powered designs and technology.

STEAMPUNK’S ORIGINS

Steampunk is typically thought to have originated in literary fiction. The first known appearance of the term Steampunk was in 1987. The term originally was used jokingly as a derivative of the term cyberpunk. But Steampunk is now used to define literary works created as far back as the 1950s! Since these fictional works have been around for decades now, it was only a matter of time until it became more prominent in the fashion world. And it’s growth and popularity has started to increase exponentially! Since the early 2000s, multiple Steampunk fashion stores have opened up and the style is becoming more and more common in media around the world.
